Swietenia macrophylla, commonly known as the Big-leaf mahogany or simply mahogany, is a magnificent and valuable tropical hardwood tree native to Central and South America. This large, deciduous tree can reach towering heights of up to 75 meters, boasting a straight trunk with a dense, rounded canopy of pinnately compound leaves. The dark green, glossy foliage is complemented by clusters of small, pale pink to purplish flowers that grow in panicles. These blossoms give rise to large, hard-shelled, brown fruit capsules containing winged seeds. Mahogany wood is highly regarded for its rich reddish-brown color, exceptional durability, and natural resistance to pests and decay, making it a prized material for furniture, cabinetry, and fine woodworking. This majestic tree not only plays a crucial role in the timber industry but also contributes to the biodiversity of tropical forests, emphasizing its ecological and economic importance. Zones 10-11
Germination
To germinate Swietenia macrophylla seeds, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to soften the hard seed coat. After soaking, plant the seeds in a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix, burying them about 1 inch deep in individual containers or seed trays. Maintain a warm, consistently humid environment with temperatures around 25-30°C (77-86°F) to encourage germination. Germination can be somewhat slow, and it may take several weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots. Swietenia macrophylla, also known as mahogany, is highly valued for its wood quality, and successful germination is essential for both conservation and sustainable forestry practices, making it a crucial step in propagating this valuable tree species.
